ESPN is reportedly leaning toward another change of its Sunday Night Baseball booth.
ESPN is preparing to remove MLB analyst Jessica Mendoza from its Sunday Night Baseball coverage, and the status of play-by-play voice Matt Vasgersian is in question, the New York Post reported Monday. According to the report, Alex Rodriguez has been assured that he will return.
ESPN’s decision on Mendoza is not final, but she is “unlikely” to return to the Sunday night package. Instead, ESPN is said to be planning to place her on weekday games or in the studio. Vasgersian, meanwhile, could be replaced by Jon Sciambi or Karl Ravech if ESPN decides to move in another direction.
Previous reporting by the Post indicated that ESPN was looking at David Cone as a potential partner for Rodriguez. The same publication reported ESPN’s interest in Chipper Jones last week, though Jones was not said to be a candidate for the Sunday night job.
Mendoza joined the Sunday night team in 2015, first as a fill-in for a suspended Curt Schilling, and then full-time the following year. Should ESPN move in another direction, it would mark yet another change to a Sunday night team that has been in constant flux since ESPN moved away from Jon Miller and Joe Morgan in 2010.
