Freshly retired NBA veteran Vince Carter is reportedly heading to ESPN. Also: longtime TV and radio analyst John Thompson has died; FOX and ESPN have announced their broadcast teams for the coming NFL and college football seasons, respectively.
Vince Carter reportedly joining ESPN
Former NBA F Vince Carter is joining ESPN as an NBA analyst, the New York Post reported Monday. Carter has been a guest analyst on ESPN’s “The Jump” multiple times and last year served as a game analyst for ESPN’s NBA Summer League coverage. He has also called Jr. NBA games for Fox Sports and, most recently, served as a studio analyst for TNT’s Tuesday night NBA coverage.
The Post report did not indicate what role Carter will have with ESPN. [NYP 8.31]
Thompson, former Georgetown coach and Turner analyst, dies
Famed Georgetown men’s basketball coach John Thompson, who worked as a radio host, interviewer and game analyst across multiple platforms after his 1999 retirement from coaching, died Sunday at age 78. Thompson spent several years as a prominent NBA game analyst and interviewer for Turner Sports and most recently called college basketball games for Westwood One radio. He was on the call for the most recent NCAA Tournament game, last year’s Virginia-Texas A&M national championship.
Thompson also hosted a local Washington (D.C.) radio show from 1999-2012. [AP 8.31]
Fox announces NFL broadcast teams
Fox Sports announced its NFL broadcast teams for the coming season on Monday, with most of the details having been previously reported. Daryl “Moose” Johnston will replace Charles Davis — who has departed for CBS — as the #2 analyst alongside Kevin Burkhardt, as the New York Post reported last month. Kevin Kugler will replace Thom Brennaman, as reported by The Athletic last week. Kenny Albert will pair with Fox newcomer Jonathan Vilma, as reported by the New York Post in June.
In addition, Adam Amin will work with Mark Schlereth and Chris Myers with Greg Jennings and Brock Huard. Dick Stockton, Tim Brando, Joe Davis and Brandon Gaudin round out the play-by-play voices, while Brady Quinn, Matt Millen and Robert Smith make up the remaining analysts.
There are no major changes on the sideline reporter front, beyond Lindsay Czarniak ascending to a regular role alongside Amin and Schlereth. [Fox Sports]
Tessitore third on ESPN’s CFB depth chart
ESPN officially announced Monday that former Monday Night Football voice Joe Tessitore will pair with Greg McElroy on college football games this season. The news was first reported by the New York Post last week. The Tessitore-McElroy team is third on ESPN’s depth chart behind the returning Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit and Sean McDonough and Todd Blackledge, meaning Tessitore will likely miss out on a College Football Playoff semifinal.
