The Red Sox’ championship-clinching victory in Game 6 of the World Series was the top draw of the postseason, with an 11.3 rating and 19.2 million viewers. The game had the third-largest audience for any baseball game since 2009, and the third-largest for any non-Yankee game since 2007.

Game 4 of the World Series, which had a lead-in from the NFL, ranked second for the postseason (9.4, 16.0M). The 11 most-viewed playoff games involved the Red Sox, though that can be primarily attributed to the team playing two of three series on broadcast TV (FOX).

The top draw of the playoffs on cable was Game 5 of the Pirates/Cardinals NLDS, which earned a 3.9 and 6.1 million viewers on TBS. Ranking second was the clinching Game 6 of the Dodgers/Cardinals NLCS, which drew a 3.7 and 6.1 million.

On the other end of the spectrum, the least-viewed game of the postseason was Pirates/Cardinals Game 2 on MLB Network (0.6, 832K). Both MLB Network games drew fewer than one million viewers.

(Numbers from various sources, including Sports Business Daily, Son of the Bronx, and Nielsen)

  • ESL

MLB and Fox have to be very disappointed with these numbers. I cannot believe that not 1 playoff game before the World Series was able to draw 10 million viewers. And, more disappointing is that the World Series was unable to draw 20 million viewers to any game for a 6 game series involving the Red Sox. MLB has to focus on creating a new marketing strategy to draw a bigger audience to the sport, specifically a younger audience.

    • Montreal Royals

It has nothing to do with marketing strategy. World Series Ratings have been in decline since the late 80′s early 90′s. The 94 Strike, Wild Card, Interleague Play, More Expansion 1998, Steroids and the All Star determining Home Field has ruined the authenticity of the game and alienated fans

  • TribeTimeNow13

Late start times and the regional appeal of baseball have also resulted in a decline in World Series and playoff ratings. At least where I go to college in the midwest, the World Series is no longer a “must watch” event for people who aren’t fans of the competing teams. In grade school and high school, my generation was unable to watch most WS games due to games on school nights lasting until midnight or later on the East Coast. Contrast that with the Super Bowl, which has a 6:30 PM start time on a Sunday, and even the NBA Finals, which takes place when most kids are out of school.
