A round of job cuts at Newsday has resulted in the jobs of three sportswriters being eliminated.
Newsday sports columnists Johnette Howard, Shaun Powell and Ken Davidoff were just three of 100 staffers laid off on Friday. The “photo department and the sports department are being particularly hard hit.”
According to the New York Post, “some of the staffers might be allowed to reapply for lower-paid editorial positions.” Davidoff is “expected to be among that group.” Powell told Journal-isms that he could “take a buyout or another position at the paper. Not sure yet what I’ll do.”
Also in the interview with Journal-isms, Powell says “Newsday will go without general sports columnists, just a baseball columnist and football columnist.” Newsday will eliminate the ‘sports columnist’ category entirely.
Earlier this year, Newsday Knicks beat writer Ken Berger left the publication for CBSSportsline.com. On Friday, MLBAM laid off 20 members of its staff. Meanwhile, job cuts at NBC have affected some on-camera talent, including former ESPN reporter Kevin Corke, who had been with NBC News since 2004.
