Dick Enberg will give up much of his national presence to become the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Padres.
Enberg was officially named the lead play-by-play voice of the Padres on Thursday. The famed broadcaster will call “in the neighborhood of 110” Padres games in each of the next three seasons.
Enberg, who will turn 75 early next year, lives in the San Diego area and says he’s a Padres fan. He has not done baseball play-by-play since 1985, when he called Angels games.
With the extensive new role, Enberg will give up his play-by-play roles on CBS NFL and NCAA basketball coverage, as well as ESPN’s coverage of the French Open.
However, Enberg will continue to call the Australian Open and Wimbledon for ESPN, and “hopes to work CBS’ U.S. Open tennis and fill in on NFL games.”
