For the second time in a week, the 2010 FIFA World Cup set a viewership record on Univision.
Thursday’s France/Mexico match drew 5.8 million viewers on Univision, according to Nielsen fast-nationals, the largest audience ever for a World Cup match on the network. The 5.8 million viewers surpasses the previous record of 5.4 million, set by Mexico/South Africa on June 11.
Univision drew more than double the audience of ESPN2 for France/Mexico. Overall, the two networks combined to average approximately 8.0 million viewers for the match.
Earlier in the day, Univision drew 1.8 million viewers for Nigeria/Greece (ESPN drew 1.7 million) and 1.4 million for Argentina/South Korea (ESPN drew 1.6 million).
Through Thursday, Univision is averaging 2.3 million viewers for the 2010 World Cup, up 13% from 2006.
Univision has outdrawn ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC substantially in three top ten markets — Los Angeles (by 92%), Dallas (by 45%) and Houston (by 127%).
