This year’s Women’s World Cup continues to deliver some of the largest audiences ever for the event.
The United States/Colombia FIFA Women’s World Cup round of 16 match earned 4.7 million viewers on Fox Sports 1 Monday night, the fifth-largest audience on record for the event, and the third-largest on cable (dating back to 1995). There was no round of 16 in previous editions of the tournament.
Four of the ten largest Women’s World Cup audiences have taken place this year alone, each involving the United States. Last Tuesday’s USA/Nigeria group stage match still ranks as the most-watched of the tournament-to-date, earning 5.0 million viewers on FOX opposite the NBA Finals.
USA/Colombia ranks as the third-most watched program on Fox Sports 1 since the network rebranded from Speed Channel two years ago, trailing only Games 4 and 5 of last year’s MLB NLCS (5.1M and 4.9M, respectively). It also ranks as the network’s most-watched program among adults 18-49, scoring 2.3 million viewers in the demo (equivalent of a 1.8 rating).
To put the numbers in perspective, Monday’s match drew more viewers than Games 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup Final on NBCSN (3.9M for both).
Coverage of the match also aired on NBC Universo, earning 256,000 viewers. Together, FS1 and NBC Universo combined for nearly five million viewers.
