The FOX broadcast network will be handing prime real estate to Major League Soccer in the coming months.
FOX will carry the 2016 MLS Cup live in primetime on Saturday, December 10, marking the first time the game has ever aired on primetime broadcast television. The MLS Cup has aired in the afternoon on cable each of the past four seasons and has not aired on a broadcast network since 2008.
As part of the MLS television deal that began last season, Fox Sports and ESPN alternate the MLS Cup each year.
In addition, FOX will also air live MLS coverage situated around its NFL coverage on September 18. The network has an NFL singleheader this season, with markets receiving a 1 PM ET game seeing a Toronto F.C./New York Red Bulls afterward (5 PM), and markets receiving a 4 PM game getting Galaxy/Sporting Kansas City beforehand (2 PM).
The Toronto F.C./Red Bulls match will be the first MLS telecast to ever benefit from an NFL lead-in.
