Gold Cup viewership is trending down, with the marquee Mexico and U.S. teams a mixed bag.
Through 18 matches, the CONCACAF Gold Cup has averaged 927,000 viewers across Univision and Univision Deportes Network — down 23% from the same point of the 2017 tournament (1.2M).
Last Wednesday’s Mexico-Canada match ranks as the most-watched of the tournament thus far, scoring a 1.4 rating and 2.67 million viewers — down a tick in ratings and 9% in viewership from Mexico’s second match in 2017 (vs. Jamaica: 1.5, 2.93M).
Despite the drop, it ranks as the most-watched men’s soccer telecast on any network this year.
Sunday’s Mexico-Martinique match ranks second, with 2.5 million viewers — up 4% from El Tri’s third match in 2017, against Curacao (2.39M).
Both matches were a marked turnaround from Mexico’s June 15 opener against Cuba, which sank 44% in ratings (from 1.6 to 0.9) and 42% in viewership (from 3.26M to 1.88M) from its 2017 opener. Overall, the three Mexico matches have averaged 2.5 million.
The United States’ two matches thus far have averaged 911,000 on the Univision networks and 864,000 on FS1. Saturday’s U.S.-Trinidad & Tobago match had 809,000 on Univision/UDN (-13%) and 895,000 on FS1 (+12%).
The team’s opener last Tuesday had a 877,000 on UniMas/UDN (-18%) and a 0.48 rating (-32%) and 744,000 viewers (-39%) on FS1. The 2017 opener aired on Univision and FOX.
