One of the most successful media rights partnerships in recent years is apparently coming to an end.
Sports Business Daily reported late Friday that CBS has walked away from negotiations with the SEC and that ESPN/ABC is in the “final stages” of a deal to acquire rights to the conference. ESPN/ABC is said to be bidding around $300 million per year, compared to the $55 million CBS is currently paying for the package.
The current CBS SEC deal does not expire until after the 2023 season. According to the report, CBS plans to carry the final four seasons of its deal unless the winning bidder can buy it out.
CBS has held SEC football rights dating back to the 1996 season. The SEC on CBS has routinely finished as the highest rated college football package in any given season, including this past season. CBS aired four of the six highest rated and most-watched games this season, led by LSU-Alabama in November (9.7, 16.64M).
Should ESPN/ABC indeed win rights to the SEC, it would more than make up for its loss of marquee Big Ten games to Fox and help the company reestablish itself as the dominant college football broadcaster.
As for CBS, the loss of the SEC would leave the network without any “Power 5” football rights. The company owns rights to Mountain West, American Athletic, Conference USA and MAC, each of which air on CBS Sports Network, as well as the Army-Navy Game and Sun Bowl.
