The spring sports calendar has been all but wiped out, with the French Open the latest event to be postponed.
The French Open tennis tournament has been postponed from May 24-June 7 to September 20-October 4, it was announced Tuesday. Assuming Wimbledon and the US Open go on as scheduled — not a safe assumption — the French Open would be the final event of the Grand Slam season.
The postponement marks the first disruption of the Grand Slam rotation since the Australian Open moved permanently from December to January in 1987.
The French Open joins what would be a crowded list of September sporting events, assuming there are any September sporting events. The Kentucky Derby was officially moved from May to September earlier Tuesday.
Also on the list of postponements are this year’s Euro 2020 and Copa America soccer tournaments, which have been pushed back to 2021.
The remainder of the March sporting schedule has been eliminated, and nearly all April events are off as well, the NFL Draft the lone exception. The May calendar is well on its way to being cleared. Tennis has already been hit hard with the cancellation of all ATP events through the end of April and all WTA events through the start of May.
