One of ESPN’s most prominent reporters has died.
ESPN announced Sunday that baseball reporter Pedro Gomez has died at age 58. The cause was not disclosed, but ESPN reported that his passing was unexpected. He was active on his Twitter account as late as Sunday afternoon.
Gomez had been with ESPN since 2003 and previously worked for the Arizona Republic, Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News, and Miami Herald, among others. He began his career in 1985 with the Miami News.
He was a familiar face on ESPN, particularly during the latter portion of Barry Bonds’ career in the mid-2000s, when he occupied the “Bonds beat.” While he primarily focused on baseball — covering 25 World Series and 22 All-Star games during his career — he also covered soccer and the NFL during his ESPN tenure.
His passing comes just weeks after the death of longtime NBA TV reporter Sekou Smith at age 48.
