The Premier League is staying put on NBC for an additional six years.
NBC on Thursday announced that it has reached a six-year contract extension to continue carrying English Premier League soccer through 2028. According to Sports Business Journal, the company will pay $433 million per year for the rights, nearly triple the current level of $150 million. (NBC Sports president Pete Bevacqua disputed the price tag in a conference call.)
By the end of the new deal, NBC will have carried the Premier League for 15 years.
Bidding on the rights was highly competitive and NBC won out in the second round. Other bidders included — per reporting by SBJ, the New York Post and author Jim Miller — WarnerMedia, Fox Sports, Amazon, ESPN and CBS. Per SBJ, Fox teamed with multiple outlets on joint bids, including WarnerMedia and Amazon.
Per Miller, WarnerMedia and Fox combined to submit a joint bid that exceeded NBC’s winning number. Per SBJ and the Post, ESPN and CBS came up about $50-60 million short at $370-380 million.
With the elimination of NBCSN, Premier League matches will air across NBC, USA and Peacock in the new deal.
