On the latest edition of the Sports Media Watch podcast, host T.J. Rives and Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch are joined by CBS NFL analyst Charles Davis — who discusses what he thought of the Patriots’ win over the weekend; his eclectic career that has included working golf tournaments and NBA games; being recognized for his role on EA Sports’ Madden NFL game; how much of his preparation he uses on the air; and more. The Davis interview starts around the 28 minute mark.
Davis discusses use of prep in the excerpt below:
“Truthfully, if you’re doing it right and the game is a good one, you’re only going to use 10-to-20 percent of what you prep for. The game’s going to dictate it. The extra prep is for when the game is lousy. When the game is lousy, that’s when they need you — because you don’t go off-air when a team’s down 50 in the third quarter. You still have to carry it through. So what else do you have, because game strategy no longer applies. Do we have notes on the quarterback, do we have notes on the coach, do we have notes on series history, the school’s history or the team’s franchise history. … All that you’d better be prepared for.”
Also this week, topics include ratings for the weekend’s college and pro football games; whether Kirk Herbstreit can continue to do Thursday Night Football, College Gameday and Saturday Night Football; what to make of the viewership for the WNBA Finals; and more.
