Hank Williams Jr. may be gone, but the rather dubious trend he started in sports television lives on.
ESPN announced Monday a deal with Columbia Records to use a variety of musicians and music groups — ranging from Willow Smith to Pearl Jam — on college basketball coverage.
Music from the various artists will be used throughout college basketball game telecasts, including in highlight packages and commercial lead-outs.
This is nothing new in sports television. In the decades since Williams Jr. began performing ‘All My Rowdy Friends’ for ABC’s Monday Night Football, the major networks have seen fit to inundate sports telecasts with as much pop music as possible.
In all, fifteen musicians or music groups will be used on the ESPN telecasts.
