The Major League Baseball All-Star Game was far and away the most-watched sporting event of the past week, while the Gold Cup final topped the weekend charts.
Last week’s MLB All-Star Game and Home Run Derby ranked as easily the two most-watched sporting events of last week. Those numbers have already been reported in depth here and here. Outside of the All-Star festivities, Sunday’s Mexico-Panama Concacaf Gold Cup final topped the weekly charts with 4.32 million on Univision, followed by Carlos Alcaraz’ five-set win over Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon men’s final on ESPN (3.64M).
Further down the list, Rory McIlroy’s win in the Scottish Open (1.86M) outdrew Stephen Curry’s win in the American Century Championship (1.44M) — though the gap was narrower than last year, when the Scottish Open averaged 2.17 million and the American Century Championship drew 1.36 million.
Airing in primetime on broadcast television for the first time, the WNBA was still unable to get over the million viewer threshold as 850,000 viewers tuned in for Saturday’s All-Star Game. That was still good enough to rank as the most-watched WNBA All-Star Game in 16 years (2007: 950K). Friday’s skills challenge and three-point shooting contest averaged 288,000 in a late afternoon window on ESPN.
Also of note, the BIG3 basketball league scored another week-over-week increase in viewership as Saturday’s CBS window averaged a season-high 600,000 viewers. The SRX racing league debuted on ESPN last Thursday with the smallest audience in series history (395K).
