Notable items this season
The NHL season has expanded to 84 games per team for the first time since the 1993-94 season, resulting in the league matching its earliest-ever start to a season — September 29.
For the final time in the current NHL media rights deal, TNT Sports has rights to the Stanley Cup Final in the United States. As of August 2026, the proposed acquisition of TNT parent company Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount does not appear likely to go through in time for the current NHL season, leaving little chance that the Cup Final would shift to CBS under new ownership (assuming that would even be contractually feasible).
The 2026-27 season is the first of a new, 12-year media rights extension with Rogers SportsNet in Canada, which starting this season will no longer sublicense games to CBC — ending the public broadcaster’s 74-year run carrying NHL games. Rogers has expanded its sublicensing agreement with Prime Video, which this season will expand its inventory to include new Wednesday night games and multiple playoff series (two in the first round and one in the second).
