The first North American World Cup in 32 years was the biggest viewership hit in the history of soccer on American television.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup averaged 7.74 million viewers across Fox Sports platforms (including pre-match coverage) and 6.3 million across Telemundo and Peacock (match window only), the latter figure combining a Nielsen-measured linear audience (3.2M) and streaming viewership tracked by Adobe Analytics (3.0M) — marking the most-watched World Cup on English and Spanish-language television, respectively.
The Fox Sports audience increased 116% from the previous World Cup four years ago, which took place in the winter months to accommodate the weather in host nation Qatar (3.59M). Telemundo viewership increased 143% on a combined basis (from 2.6M), with the Nielsen audience up 79% (vs. 1.8M) and Adobe-measured streaming viewership up nearly 300% (vs. 767K).
Nine of the 11 largest soccer audiences ever on English-language television, and the top 15 Spanish-language audiences, occurred during this year’s tournament. A full 11 matches on Fox Sports averaged at least 15 million viewers, and 42 on Telemundo and Peacock averaged at least six million. In both cases, the comparable figure four years ago was two.
Note that this year’s World Cup is just the second since Nielsen began including out-of-home viewing in its estimates in 2020 and the first since the company shifted to a new methodology last fall that integrates “Big Data” from smart TVs and set-top boxes with its traditional panel. Those changes have given most sports properties a leg up on even just a year ago, much less four years ago — and certainly as compared to years prior to 2020.
As previously noted, Sunday’s Spain-Argentina final averaged a combined match window audience of 66.4 million viewers across FOX (42.5M) and Telemundo (23.9M), marking the largest television audience — excluding NFL games and news events — since the series finale of “Seinfeld” in 1998. The official Nielsen audience, including pre-match coverage and excluding Telemundo’s Adobe Analytics streaming viewership, was the largest since the series finale of “Friends” with 49.0 million.
In addition to Sunday’s final, Saturday’s France-England third-place match averaged 13.13 million on FOX (including pre-match) and 7.7 million on Telemundo and Peacock (match window only), both ranking as records for a third-place match on English or Spanish-language television.
The FOX audience, which peaked with 18.53 million in the 6:45 PM ET quarter-hour, surpassed France’s actual victory in the 2018 World Cup over Croatia (11.44M).
Having originally acquired rights to the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, Fox and Telemundo were awarded rights to this year’s World Cup at reportedly below-market rates without having to go through a formal bidding process — an arrangement that has been widely assumed as compensation for the 2022 World Cup being held in the winter months. Rights to the next World Cup in 2030 are expected to be negotiated in the coming months. Next year’s Women’s World Cup will air exclusively on Netflix.
