Though the final numbers were again more respectable than the overnights indicated, Monday’s coverage of the Winter Olympics still had a double-digit decline from 2010.
Primetime coverage of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics drew a 12.8 final rating and 22.4 million viewers on NBC Monday night, down 10% in ratings and 11% in viewership from Vancouver in 2010 (14.2, 22.4M), and flat and up 6%, respectively, from Turin in 2006 (12.8, 21.1M). The comparable night of the most recent Olympics (London in 2012) earned an 18.0 rating and 31.6 million viewers.
Monday’s telecast ranks as the lowest rated and least-viewed primetime Olympics window since Thursday’s ‘bonus’ coverage (11.3, 20.0M). Keep in mind that Monday’s primetime window was the first of the Olympics that did not feature figure skating.
So far, the Sochi Olympics has ranked between Vancouver and Turin in the television ratings. The Friday, Saturday and Sunday telecasts finished far closer to Vancouver than to Turin, with Monday’s window an exception.
