At least in the overnights, primetime coverage of the Winter Olympics fell substantially on Monday.
Primetime coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympics earned a 13.7 overnight rating on NBC Monday night, down 18% from Vancouver in 2010 (16.6), and down 11% from Turin in 2006 (15.3). The comparable night of the most recent Olympics — London in 2012 — earned a 20.1 overnight.
Monday’s 13.7 overnight is the lowest for any Olympic broadcast since Thursday’s ‘bonus’ coverage (11.8), and easily had the biggest decline from both 2010 and 2006. It is possible that the declines could narrow when the final numbers are released.
Salt Lake City led all markets for Monday’s coverage with a 21.7 rating. Minneapolis ranked second, with a 19.9, followed by Denver (19.5), Milwaukee (18.2) and Austin, TX (16.7).
Over on NBCSN, live Olympic coverage drew a 0.8 overnight — well below Saturday (1.9) and Sunday (2.1), but still up 60% from the comparable day of the 2012 London Olympics.
