In a strange move, Fox Sports has hired political operative Frank Luntz.
Fox announced Thursday that Luntz has been hired as a contributor to “Fox Sports Live” to analyze breaking news events and host a regular focus group segment. Luntz will make his debut Thursday night with a focus group segment about NFL prospect Michael Sam.
Luntz is a noted right-of-center political figure, having contributed both to Republican candidates and the Fox News Channel cable news outlet. It is not unprecedented for political figures to venture into sports coverage, but usually they have some sports background — Keith Olbermann, for example, was a sports anchor long before he began working in cable news. Luntz, on the other hand, has no sports pedigree of note.
In a statement, Luntz said sports are his “passion” and that he plans “to bring analysis and accountability to the language of sports and those who play them.”
