ABC finally managed to eke out a slight increase in overnight ratings for NBA coverage on Sunday. In other news, overnight ratings dropped double-digits for the WGC-Cadillac Championship, and NHL ratings were flat on NBC.
Overnights Mixed For NBA on ABC
- Sunday’s Heat/Bulls NBA regular season game earned a 2.8 overnight rating on ABC, up a tick from Celtics/Thunder last year (2.7), and the first ABC game of the season to have an increase in overnights over last year. Of course, last year’s Celtics/Thunder game was a season-low at the time. Later in the day, the Thunder/Lakers game had a 2.6 overnight — down 26% from Bulls/Lakers last year (3.5), and down 19% from Celtics/Lakers in 2012 (3.2). (Sun. numbers from ShowBuzz Daily)
Doral Down on NBC, But Solid
- Final round coverage of the WGC-Cadillac Championship earned a 3.4 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, down 23% from last year, when Tiger Woods won (4.4), and up 10% from 2012 (3.1). The 3.4 overnight is tied as the third-highest for the event since it moved to Doral in 2007. Third round action on Saturday drew a 2.3, down 23% from last year (3.0), but up a tick from 2012 (2.2). NHL Overnight Flat on NBC
- The Red Wings/Rangers NHL regular season game earned a 0.8 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, matching both Rangers/Capitals last year and Bruins/Penguins in 2012. The game had the lowest overnight of any sporting event on broadcast over the weekend, falling just shy of the MVC Championship Game in college basketball (0.9). (Sports Business Daily)
