ESPN attracted record numbers for Sunday’s World Cup match between the USA and Portugal.
The United States/Portugal FIFA World Cup match earned a 9.1 overnight rating on ESPN, the highest ever for a soccer match on ESPN or ESPN2. The previous high was an 8.6 for the Japan/USA Women’s World Cup final in 2011.
The 9.1 is also tied as the highest overnight ever for a non-football program on ESPN or ESPN2, matching Game 7 of the 2012 NBA Eastern Conference Finals.
Sunday’s match increased 30% over ESPN’s coverage of USA/Ghana on Monday evening (7.0). Keep in mind the numbers do not include Univision coverage.
Washington (DC) was the top market for ESPN’s telecast with a 13.3 rating. Columbus (OH) ranked second with a 12.6, with New York (12.5), Boston (11.5) and Hartford-New Haven (11.3) rounding out the top five.
