Ratings and viewership sank for the Poinsettia Bowl.
The Navy/San Diego State Poinsettia Bowl drew a 1.6 final rating and 2.5 million viewers on ESPN December 23, down 27% in ratings and 25% in viewership from Utah State/Northern Illinois last year (2.2, 3.3M) but up 7% and 12%, respectively, from BYU/San Diego State in 2012 (1.5, 2.2M).
The Midshipmen’s win earned the second-smallest Poinsettia Bowl audience since 2007, when Utah/Navy drew 2.5 million. Only the 2012 game earned a smaller audience over that span.
Keep in mind the game had a weaker lead-in than last year. The inaugural Boca Raton Bowl drew 2.2 million viewers, down a third from last year’s comparable Little Ceasar’s Bowl (3.3M).
