Overnight ratings surged for the first USA Women’s World Cup match.
The United States/Australia FIFA Women’s World Cup match earned a 2.1 overnight rating on Fox Sports 1 Monday night, according to Sports Business Daily — up 133% from the first USA match of the 2011 World Cup, against North Korea on ESPN (0.9). Monday’s match began at 7:30 PM ET, while the 2011 match aired at 11:30 AM.
The 2.1 overnight topped all three USA group play games in 2011, which topped out at a 1.3 for USA/Colombia.
Compared to other recent soccer events, the 2.1 also topped Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final on FOX (1.8) and the Premier League Championship Sunday on the NBC family of networks (1.4). It ranked far behind the first USA match of last year’s World Cup, which earned a 7.0 on ESPN. That match aired on a Sunday evening.
Head-to-head, USA/Australia trailed competing coverage of the NHL Stanley Cup Final on NBCSN (2.9).
