Despite an early start, Game 3 of the ALCS put up solid numbers on FOX Monday afternoon.
Yankees/Angels Game 3 drew a 4.8/10 final rating and 7.3 million viewers on FOX Monday afternoon, up 60% and 61%, respectively, from a 3.0/6 and 5 million for Red Sox/Rays Game 3 on TBS last year, also on a Monday afternoon.
Compared to past LCS on FOX, Game 3 was down 14% in ratings and 18% in viewership from Phillies/Dodgers Game 3 on a Sunday night last year (5.6/9, 8.8 mil), and down 28% and 27%, respectively, from Red Sox/Indians Game 3 on a Monday night in ’07 (6.7, 9.9 mil).
Monday’s game ranks as the highest rated, most-viewed weekday afternoon LCS telecast since Cardinals/Astros Game 6 in ’04 (7.0/15, 10.3 mil). That comes of the heels of Game 2 finishing as the highest rated, most-viewed Saturday night LCS game since ’04.
On a less positive note, Yankees/Angels Game 3 is tied as the fifth-lowest rated LCS telecast on FOX since at least ’02. Additionally, this is the first time during that span that an LCS game involving the Yankees has drawn less than a 5.0 rating.
Yankees/Angels Game 3 compares favorably to other recent weekday afternoon sporting events on broadcast. In September, the U.S. Open men’s final on CBS drew a 2.4/5 and 3.4 million viewers on a Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Monday afternoon finish of golf’s U.S. Open drew a 3.5/11 and 4.8 million on NBC in June. Back in March, CBS averaged a 3.2 rating for four weekday afternoon NCAA Tournament telecasts.
Through three games, the Yankees/Angels ALCS is averaging a 5.3 rating and 8.4 million viewers on FOX, up 47% in ratings and 45% in viewers from the first three games of last year’s Rays/Red Sox series on TBS (3.6, 5.8 mil). Compared to last year’s NLCS on FOX, Yankees/Angels is up 13% and 16%, respectively, from the first three games of Phillies/Dodgers (4.7, 7.2 mil).
Going back further, Yankees/Angels trails the ’07 Red Sox/Indians ALCS (5.8, 8.7 million through three games), though it should be pointed out that each of those games aired at night. The series also trails the ’04 Red Sox/Yankees ALCS (9.3 rating through three games), the last LCS to feature the Yankees.
