For the first time, NBCSN will air a Notre Dame football game.
NBC Sports announced Wednesday that the November 21 Boston College/Notre Dame game will air on NBCSN, marking the network’s first ever Notre Dame telecast. The game, part of the Shamrock Series, will air in primetime from Boston’s Fenway Park.
Wednesday’s announcement was a long time coming. NBC has been able to move a select number of Notre Dame games to cable dating back at least to its 2008 contract, and the prospect of putting games on NBCSN (then Versus) has been discussed since Comcast first began pursuing NBC Universal in 2009.
NBCSN has aired college football only sparingly since rebranding from Versus in 2012, with the network’s selections limited to one season of Mountain West football and a slate of FCS games. The Notre Dame game will be easily the network’s biggest college football telecast since said rebrand.
In addition to the Notre Dame game, NBCSN will also air the Grambling/Southern Bayou Classic this year — an NBC staple for over 20 years, albeit a low-rated one.
