Freed from NFL competition, viewership soared for the second Camellia Bowl.
Saturday’s Appalachian State/Ohio Camellia Bowl drew 1.9 million viewers on ESPN, up two-thirds from last year’s inaugural game between Bowling Green and South Alabama (1.1M). Unlike last year, when coverage aired in primetime opposite the NFL, this year’s game aired in an earlier timeslot absent such competition.
Compared to the bowl game in the same timeslot last year, the Western Michigan/Air Force Potato Bowl, viewership climbed 28% from 1.5 million.
The Mountaineers’ comeback win was the most-watched bowl game of the day on cable (three telecasts), edging the preceding New Mexico Bowl (1.8M).
