As had been rumored from the start, Sean McDonough will fill the vacancy left by Mike Tirico on Monday Night Football.
ESPN announced Monday that McDonough has been named the new voice of MNF, working alongside the returning Jon Gruden and sideline reporter Lisa Salters. He will make his debut when ESPN airs the Hall of Fame Game on August 7.
Once the voice of the World Series on CBS, McDonough will be the fifth play-by-play broadcaster in the 46-year history of MNF. The trio of McDonough, Gruden and Salters represents a complete makeover from ESPN’s original team of Tirico, Joe Theismann, Tony Kornheiser and Michele Tafoya ten years ago.
McDonough is in his second go-round with ESPN, having rejoined the network in 2000, and recently signed a contract extension. While the MNF assignment obviously takes him off ESPN’s college football coverage, he will continue to call college basketball games after the NFL season concludes.
