A historic comeback and walk-off grand slam did little to boost viewership for the Women’s College World Series.
Game 2 of the Auburn/Oklahoma WCWS had a 0.9 final rating and 1.4 million viewers on ESPN Tuesday night, down 25% in ratings and 23% in viewership from Florida/Michigan last year (1.2, 1.9M) and flat and up 1%, respectively, from Florida/Alabama in 2014 (1.43M to 1.41M).
Last year’s game, it should be noted, was the sixth-most watched WCWS telecast ever on the ESPN family of networks.
The Tigers’ series-tying win, in which they came back from a seven run deficit and won on a walk-off Grand Slam, faced competition from the United States/Costa Rica Copa America match on Fox Sports 1 (1.5M) and UniMas (2.7M) as well as presidential primary coverage on the cable news channels.
On Monday, Game 1 of the series had a 0.7 and 1.0 million viewers — down 30% in ratings and a third in viewership from last year (1.0, 1.5M) and flat and down 8%, respectively, from 2014 (0.7, 1.1M), both of which aired on ESPN2.
