The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs concluded with a thud.
Final round coverage of The Tour Championship, won by Jim Furyk to clinch the FedEx Cup, drew a mere 1.3 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, the lowest overnight rating for final round coverage of the event since it became part of the FedEx Cup in 2007.
The 1.3 overnight marks a 61% decline from last year (3.3), when Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods finished 1-2 in the tournament and Woods clinched the FedEx Cup.
Ominously, the 1.3 also marks a 28% decline from 2008 (1.8), when Woods did not play.
Overall, the 1.3 is the second-lowest overnight for the final round of The Tour Championship since at least ’99, ahead of only final round coverage in November ’06 (1.1).
Saturday’s third round action drew a 1.2 overnight, down 50% from last year (1.2) and down 8% from 2008 (1.3).
