A tightly contested Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final delivered in the overnights.
Sunday’s Penguins-Predators Stanley Cup Final Game 6 earned a 4.8 overnight rating on NBC, up 30% from Penguins-Sharks last year (3.7) but down 14% from Lightning-Blackhawks on a Monday night in 2015 (5.6).
The 4.8 is the fourth-highest for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final since Stars-Devils on ABC in 2000 (5.2). The Blackhawks’ three Cup-clinching game sixes — 2010 (5.8), 2013 (5.6) and 2015 — hold the top three spots. Regardless of game, the 4.8 tied the eighth-highest NHL overnight since NBC resumed airing games in the 2005-06 season.
The Penguins’ championship clinching win earned a 40.0 rating in Pittsburgh — up 14% from the team’s Game 6 clincher last year (35.1) and the market’s second-best NHL rating on record. Game 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final had a 42.2.
In Nashville, Game 6 had a 28.3 rating, edging Game 4 (28.0) as the market’s best NHL rating ever.
