For the first time in the Confederations Cup, Telemundo attracted a bigger audience for the Mexican national team than did Univision four years ago.
Sunday’s Mexico-Russia FIFA Confederations Cup match earned 2.2 million viewers on Telemundo, up 5% from Mexico’s third match in 2013 against Japan, which aired in a later timeslot on Univision (2.1M). It was the first of Mexico’s matches to improve over 2013.
It was a different story on English-language television, as coverage of the same match pulled a 0.5 final rating and 780,000 viewers on the FOX broadcast network, down a tick in ratings and 16% in viewership from Mexico-Japan in ’13, which aired on ESPN (0.6, 933K).
English-language figures include pre-match coverage, while Spanish-language numbers do not.
Telemundo is now averaging 1.0 million viewers for Confederations Cup coverage, down 29% from 2013 on Univision (1.4M). While that is a substantial decline, the network was pacing 39% behind ’13 through Wednesday.
