Last night, the Phoenix Suns defeated the New Jersey Nets 161 to 157 in double overtime. Last night, there was an NFL game. And last night, ESPN led SportsCenter with the always relevant hot stove story.
Barry Bonds signed a 1 year deal with, gasp, the San Francisco Giants.
Hot stove baseball has to be the least relevant, most irritating sporting ‘event’ in history. ESPN devotes time to special offseason editions Baseball Tonight, drooling over what big ‘star’ the Yankees or Red Sox will swallow up next. This year, it’s slightly different, as people actually thought Barry Bonds might end up with one of the other 27 teams in Major League Baseball (the Rockies and Devil Rays don’t count; let’s face it, they’re minor league). ESPN obsessed about that for a little while, ignoring the fact that while he’s inching up on Hank Aaron’s all time record, Barry Bonds is far from popular, far from important, and far from what he was even two years ago. I’m not one of the Jay Mariotti-type witchhunters, but I do know that Bonds isn’t nearly as good as he used to be, thanks to knee issues, and he’s certainly not important enough in the large scheme of sports to lead off SportsCenter on a night where, hello, there were actual sporting events.
