The financial fallout from the Michael Vick dogfighting indictment has just begun, and it is severe.
Darren Rovell of CNBC reports that NFLShop.com has suspended sales of Vick “jerseys and collectible items such as autographed balls and other memorabilia“. Reebok has done the same, releasing a statement that states in part: “While we respect the legal process we find the allegations against Mr. Vick too disturbing to ignore, therefore, we have decided to immediately suspend selling Vick NFL product, both at retail and on-line through the Reebok website.”
While the actions taken by the NFL and Reebok are indicative of how much of a pariah Vick has become, neither is as damaging as the action taken by Nike. The company has suspended its endorsement contract with Vick, an action that comes on the heels of the postponement of the release of Vick’s new shoe. While the contract has not been terminated, some believe that there is little chance of Vick ever endorsing Nike products again. In a statement, the apparel giant said “Nike is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick, and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent“.
The news that Nike is suspending Vick’s contract is being viewed as a victory by PETA. The animal rights group, which may be suffering from rather severe delusions of grandeur in thinking that its protests would have had any effect on Nike other than mild annoyance, released this statement:
Where does Vick go from here? Nike never canceled its contract with Kobe Bryant after the NBA star was charged with sexual assault. Though Nike stopped using Bryant in its advertising for two years, the public rehabilitation of the former champion has led the company to begin using his likeness again in advertising campaigns. Should Vick somehow be cleared and make a massive image make-over, there is a possibility — however infinitesimal — that he may find himself back in favor at some point.
In the meantime, Vick deals with a pariah status and national disdain. And with nearly everyone abandoning him, the former superstar has a tough road ahead.
