World Series ratings hit a new record-low Saturday night.
Saturday’s Astros-Nationals World Series Game 4 averaged a 5.9 rating and 10.21 million viewers on FOX, per Nielsen fast-nationals, marking the lowest rated and second-least watched World Series game on record.
The previous ratings low was a 6.1 for Rays-Phillies Game 3 in 2008 and Giants-Tigers Game 3 in 2012. The Rays-Phillies game still ranks as the least-watched, averaging 9.84 million.
As goes without saying, ratings and viewership were the lowest ever for a World Series Game 4. The previous lows were a 6.3 and 10.74 million for Giants-Royals in 2014.
Houston’s series-tying win, which peaked with 11.94 million from 10:15-10:30 PM ET, declined 25% in ratings and viewership from Game 4 last year (Red Sox-Dodgers: 7.9, 13.56M) and 32% and 34% respectively from 2017 (Dodgers-Astros: 8.7, 15.40M).
Including streaming and Spanish-language viewership, it averaged a 10.65 million (-25%).
Locally, Game 4 drew a 30.4 rating and 54 share in Houston — down 7% from Dodgers-Astros two years ago (32.6) and down 28% from Houston’s series-clinching loss to the White Sox in 2005 (42.2).
Washington D.C. turned in a series-low 17.3/36, down 25, 26 and 28 percent respectively from Games 1-3 (23.1, 23.5 and 24.0). The series-low is a marked reversal from the the first three games, which set successive 18-year highs in the market.
Game 4 was the first of the series in Washington trail the comparable game of the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup Final appearance (22.9 on NBC).
The record-low 5.9 rating still clocks in ahead of two NBA Finals games — Nets-Spurs Game 2 in 2003 (5.2) and Cavaliers-Spurs Game 2 in 2007 (5.6) — and sixteen New Year’s Six and Bowl Championship Series college football bowls. No NCAA Tournament Final Four game has gone below the 6.1 rating for Villanova’s 44-point rout of Oklahoma in 2016.
Demographic data will be added when available.
