With no sports set to air for months, ESPN would no doubt love to air its ten-part Chicago Bulls documentary — if it was finished.
The ten-part ESPN documentary “The Last Dance,” focused on the Chicago Bulls’ final championship run in 1998, is not yet complete, ESPN EVP/programming acquisitions & scheduling Burke Magnus told ESPN’s in-house blog Tuesday.
“[W]e are limited there at the moment,” Magnus said, “Obviously you can’t air it until it’s done.”
Magnus did say that ESPN is looking to move up any original content that it possibly can, meaning that when the documentary is done, it will almost certainly air earlier than its original June release date.
As far as other content, Magnus said that ESPN is trying to secure rights to air old games that did not originally air on one of its networks, such as NCAA men’s basketball tournament games.
Since the majority of sporting events were canceled or postponed last Thursday, ESPN’s programming has largely consisted of old documentaries and live studio shows. Even the network’s daytime talk shows have been pulled off the air.
The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has decimated the sports industry, resulting in the cancellations or postponements of nearly all events around the globe.
