ESPN NBA analyst Jalen Rose will spend just under three weeks in jail for drunken driving.
Rose was sentenced to 93 days in Oakland County Jail for driving under the influence, of which he will serve twenty. He will begin his sentence next Tuesday.
The nearly three-week jail sentence comes despite the fact that the probation department “did not recommend jail time” (freep.com, 7/27).
According to the Detroit Free Press, the judge in this case “has a record of sending first-time drunken drivers to jail, often for days or weeks,” whereas her peers “often order first-time offenders to serve probation and perform community service.”
Rose was arrested on March 11, though news of the arrest did not surface until weeks later. He was suspended from ESPN, and later pleaded guilty to one count of DUI.
Though a flurry of ESPN personalities have been involved in legal trouble over the past year, Rose is the only one to actually serve jail time. ESPN NHL analyst Matthew Barnaby was ordered to complete community service and counseling following his arrest on domestic violence charges, and ESPN.com writer Howard Bryant agreed to serve six months probation after he was charged with domestic violence and assault of a police officer.
Both Barnaby and Bryant will have all charges dismissed should they comply with those respective orders.
Former ESPN pundit Jay Mariotti received probation and community service after pleading no-contest to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge last year. He currently faces new domestic violence charges.
