Though viewers will have the opportunity to watch all Olympic events live next year, primetime coverage of will continue to use the oft-criticized tape delay format.
NBC will use the “traditional formula of human-interest features and taped competition” for primetime coverage of the 2012 London Olympic Games, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.
NBC Sports Group chairman Mark Lazarus said of the packaged, tape-delayed coverage, “That’s what our approach on the Olympics has been and what it will continue to be” (Associated Press, 8/30).
The use of tape delay figures to attract far less furor than usual next year, as viewers will still be able to watch all Olympic events — including those tape-delayed to primetime — live in some form.
