- First Charles Barkley, now Bill Simmons: ESPN’s “Sports Guy” will be in the booth for two college basketball games on ESPNU. Simmons may generate laughs with his columns, but his mousy, high-pitched voice is one that most sports fans will loathe hearing during a game. Let’s hope ESPN won’t turn him into the NBA or college basketball’s version of Tony Kornheiser.
- NBC drew a 17.2 overnight rating for Cowboys/Seahawks, a huge rating for a Saturday night and the highest Saturday night Wildcard playoff rating since 2003.
- The New York Post, New York Daily News and Newsday were all apocalyptic about the Giants and Jets elimination from the playoffs, but all three papers used images from the Giants/Eagles game. In fact, the only image of a Jets player was on the Daily News, and it came in a tiny box on the right hand corner of the page.
- The NHL may be getting some better treatment on NBC than it did on ABC or ESPN, but you still won’t find Al Michaels or Bob Costas on game coverage. Michaels did anchor the Stanley Cup Finals for ABC during the decade, but NBC is likely to stay with the dependable Bill Clement.
