For the past several years, the ESPN brand has been put on everything from cellphones to weekends. Now, the ubiquitous sports entity is placing its name on a device that its target audience simply cannot live without — the remote control.
ESPN is debuting ESPN The Ultimate Remote just in time for Father’s Day. The remote does more than simply switching the channel from ESPN to ABC and back to ESPN. Fans can access sports scores and information, in addition to “one-touch access to a weather widget, mobile Internet browsing, email and text messaging, mobile Internet and entertainment search content.”
Whether the Ultimate Remote will be more successful than the infamous ESPN Mobile remains to be seen.
The remote appears far too complex for its own good. While the goal is to “[simplify] advanced home theater equipment operation“, one look at the “how to” page on the espnremote.com website makes it easy to forecast many Father’s Day headaches.
