- Jay Mariotti: After 17 years, the Chicago Sun-Times columnist resigned on Tuesday night. Mariotti, who had not endeared himself to his co-workers during his tenure, explained his resignation by telling the Chicago Tribune that sports journalism is now “entirely a Web site business.” Sun-Times editor Michael Cooke: “We wish Jay well and will miss him ? not personally, of course ? but in the sense of noticing he is no longer here, at least for a few days.” Fellow Sun-Times sportswriter Rick Telander: “If he’s gone, I don’t even know how to describe it. … I am reborn.”
- Michael Phelps: The star of the 2008 Beijing Olympics will host the season premiere of Saturday Night Live on NBC. Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the Olympics and helped NBC to stellar ratings, will be the first athlete to host SNL since LeBron James hosted last year’s season premiere.
