One former ESPN writer is taking aim at Peter Gammons in the wake of Monday’s Alex Rodriguez interview.
In an article on his website, former Sports Illustrated and ESPN writer Jeff Pearlman criticized Gammons for not challenging Rodriguez’ allegations against SI writer Selena Roberts. In the interview with Gammons, Rodriguez said Roberts had been stalking him, and at one point accused her of trying to break into his house.
Pearlman, who referred to Gammons as the “Larry King of sports television” due to what he perceives as soft questioning, wrote that the longtime ESPN baseball reporter “absolutely had to?follow up Rodriguez?s presumably ludicrous accusations with a question or two or three or 10.”
In response, Gammons told Deadspin that “in retrospect, I should have interrupted the Arod rant.” Gammons: “My first question asked if Selena’s story were true, he essentially admitted it was, and I believed she was therefore vindicated. … I was trying to get Alex in his own words, but Jeff’s criticism has merit that I accept.”
