Another Major League Baseball team will stream live games over the internet.
The San Diego Padres, MLBAM and Cox Communications have announced an agreement to stream live Padres telecasts in the San Diego market via Padres.com and Cox.com. The package of Padres telecasts, which will launch on July 16, will be available to subscribers of Cox’s High Speed Internet service.
The Padres are the second MLB team to stream live games in-market. Earlier this month, the New York Yankees announced a similar deal with YES Network and Cablevision. While other MLB teams “do not appear to be close to deals for in-market streaming,” MLB President Bob Dupuy “expects ‘a majority’ of teams will have such deals in place sometime next season.”
Like the Yankees, the Padres’ live streaming package will cost $49.95 for the remainder of the season, or $19.95 for any 30-day period.
Revenue from the live, in-market streaming arrangements will be split 50-50 between MLB Advanced Media and local interests — “the participating team, its regional sports network and the local cable provider” — according to a memo obtained by Sports Business Journal.
The “revenue splits are not cast in stone and could change in two years,” upon review by MLB Commissioner Bud Selig.
