- ESPN has announced plans to debut a new, Boston-specific version of ESPN.com next month. ESPNBoston.com will launch on September 14, featuring Boston-specific columns from former Boston Globe writers Michael Smith, Peter Gammons and new acquisition Mike Reiss, as well as localized versions of SportsCenter. This is just the latest city-specific version of ESPN.com; ESPN launched ESPNChicago.com in April, and plans to launch sites focusing on New York, Los Angeles and Dallas over the next several months.
- ESPN will air the September 12 USC/Ohio State game in 3D. The 3D broadcast, which will be available in home markets Los Angeles and Columbus, among other sites, will “employ separate production trucks, technical crews and on-air commentators” from the regular broadcast on ESPN and ESPNHD. This marks ESPN’s first public 3D telecast; the net has been “privately testing the technology” over the past two years.
- NASCAR will move next year’s Daytona 500 Qualifying up a day to avoid a potential conflict with Super Bowl XLIV. Daytona 500 Qualifying will now take place on Saturday, February 6, at 1 PM ET, as opposed to its customary Sunday date. Qualifying will precede the 2010 Budweiser Shootout, which will take place later that night.
