Yankees/Angels tops 10 million viewers

The Yankees/Angels ALCS hit a series-high on Tuesday.

The Yankees’ 10-1 blowout of the Angels in Game 4 of the ALCS drew a 6.7/11 final rating and 10.3 million viewers on FOX Tuesday night, up 76% and 80%, respectively, from a 3.8/6 and 5.7 million for Rays/Red Sox Game 4 on TBS last year.

Compared to last year’s NLCS on FOX, Yankees/Angels Game 4 was up 34% in ratings and viewership from Phillies/Dodgers Game 4 (5.0, 7.7 mil). However, compared to the ’07 ALCS on FOX, the game was down 18% and 17%, respectively, from Red Sox/Indians Game 4 (8.2, 12.4 mil).

Excluding the NFL, Game 4 ranks as the highest rated sporting event since the MLB All Star Game in July (8.9), and the most-viewed since Florida/LSU on CBS earlier this month (10.5 mil).

Game 4 drew a 19.8/30 in New York and a 10.8/20 in Los Angeles.

Through Game 4, the Yankees/Angels ALCS is averaging a 5.6 rating and 8.8 million viewers on FOX — up 51% in ratings and 54% in viewership from the first four games of last year’s Rays/Red Sox ALCS on TBS (3.7, 5.7 mil), and up 19% and 22%, respectively, from the first four games of last year’s Phillies/Dodgers NLCS on FOX (4.7, 7.2 mil).

Despite the increased ratings, the Yankees/Angels series is still off the pace set by Red Sox/Indians in ’07, which averaged a 6.3 and 9.5 million through four games.

The first four games of the ’04 Red Sox/Yankees ALCS — the last LCS to feature the Yankees — averaged a 9.4 rating on FOX. Not a single game of the ’03 or ’04 ALCS (both featuring the Yankees against the Red Sox) drew a rating lower than a 7.0.
