Overnight ratings for the final night of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials increased substantially on Sunday.
Coverage of the U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics trials drew a 6.6 overnight rating on NBC Sunday night, up 50% from 2008 (4.4), and up 35% from 2004 (4.9).
The 6.6 is the highest for the gymnastics trials since 2000 (8.5). For some perspective, the 6.6 actually ties the overnight for final round coverage of the 2012 U.S. Open on NBC.
Earlier in the night, the penultimate night of the swimming trials drew a 5.3 overnight — even with comparable Sunday coverage in 2008 (5.3). It should be pointed out that the Sunday telecast in 2008 took place on the final night of the swimming trials.
Also Sunday, the final night of the track & field trials drew a 4.0 overnight, down 7% from the final night in 2008 (4.3).
