Overnight ratings took the plunge for the PGA Tour Houston Open over the weekend. In other news, NBC had declines for the NHL on Sunday, and NCAA Tournament ratings have had a modest increase through the Elite Eight.
Big Declines For Houston Open
- Rain-shortened final round coverage of the PGA Tour Houston Open earned a 1.5 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, down 42% from last year (2.6), and down 46% from 2011 (2.8). The 1.5 is the lowest overnight for final round coverage of the event since 2004, when rain-affected coverage drew the same rating. On Saturday, third round action drew a 1.4 overnight — down 33% from last year (2.1), and down 13% from 2011 (1.6). (Weekend overnights from Sports Business Daily)
Blackhawks/Red Wings Down on NBC
- Sunday’s Blackhawks/Red Wings NHL regular season game drew a 1.0 overnight rating on NBC, down 17% from Flyers/Penguins last year (1.2), but even with Rangers/Flyers in 2010 (1.0). The teams’ first meeting on NBC this season, which took place during the Blackhawks’ 24-game points streak, earned a 1.6 overnight. (Weekend overnights from Sports Business Daily)
NCAA Tournament Still Trending Above Last Year
- Through Sunday’s games, the 2013 NCAA Tournament has averaged a combined 6.2 rating and 9.7 million viewers on CBS and Turner Sports — up 9% in ratings and 11% in viewership from last year (5.7, 8.7M), and up 3% in both measures compared to 2011 (6.0, 9.4M). This marks the highest rated NCAA Tournament through the Elite Eight since 2005 (6.3), and the most-viewed since 1994 (9.7M). (CBS/Turner Sports)
