Even in the middle of the night, Mexico’s national team pulled in good numbers on Univision. In other news, a move from broadcast to cable boosted the F1 U.S. Grand Prix, and the debut of college basketball on the FOX broadcast network was a dud.
Despite Late Night Slot, Mexico WC Qualifier Strong on Univision
- The Mexico/New Zealand World Cup Qualifier, which aired from 12:49 to 3:04 AM ET, earned 3.1 million viewers on Univision Wednesday morning. Despite the late night timeslot, the match finished just shy of the sides’ previous meeting one week earlier, which aired earlier in the day (3.8M on Univision, Univision Deportes). Viewership for the ESPN telecast of the match was not immediately available. (Univision)
NBC Tops 1M Viewers For F1 U.S. Grand Prix
- Coverage of the Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix drew a 0.7 U.S. rating and 1.0 million viewers on NBC last Sunday, up 67% in ratings and 47% in viewership from last year’s race on Speed Channel (0.4, 688K). Entering Sunday’s season finale, NBC has averaged almost 1.2 million viewers for F1 coverage. (NBC Sports Group Press Box)
College Hoops Weak on FOX
- Last Saturday’s Ohio State/Marquette college basketball game drew a mere 0.5 U.S. rating and 799,000 viewers on the FOX broadcast network, the lowest rated and least-viewed sporting event of the week on broadcast TV. Even boxing coverage on NBC drew better numbers (0.6, 815K). By comparison, the season’s top game on Fox Sports 1 (through last Sunday) drew only 182,000 viewers. (Nielsen)
