One day in and the 2014 FIFA World Cup is already setting ratings records.
Thursday’s Brazil/Croatia World Cup opener earned a 3.2 overnight rating on ESPN, up 52% from the 2010 South Africa/Mexico opener (2.1), and the top overnight rating for a World Cup opener since at least 1994 (overnights were not available prior to 1998).
Comparable numbers were not available for Univision, which also aired the match.
Washington, D.C. was the top market for Thursday’s match with a 5.1 rating. Boston (5.0) ranked second, followed by Miami-Ft. Lauderdale (4.7), Los Angeles (4.6) and New York (4.5).
